There’s avariety of methods used for PCB-etching. Mine uses Presensetized, copper-clad boards. In this case, presensetized boards mean that there is a thin layer of photoresist on top of the board. this photoresist serves as a barrier between the copper layer and the outside world. The idea of PCB etching is simple: you take a copper board and selectively remove the copper that you don’t want. The end product can look something like this:
